Mertola Museum Town: An archaeological project of integrated development
Here historical and archaeological research is the basis of a development project based on a museographic program, currently with 11 nuclei to be visited, spread throughout the historic centre. The museum is the village itself, as the heritage circuit favours wandering through streets and alleys, making known the organizational structure and its surrounding landscape.
AT THE FURTHEST POINT OF AL-ANDALUS – MÉRTOLA AND THE GUADIANA
“(…)a large river named al-Gawr (subterranean river), thus named because although it is large enough to carry boats in some places, in others it is lost underground, to the extent that not a single drop of water is to be seen. After that, the river follows its course as far as the fort at Mértola and then empties itself into the sea not far from Saltés”
In this catalogue we have compiled basic information on over 18 Mértola Museum nuclei created before 2014 since this museum was never destined to be closed inside a single building, but rather called for new spaces and concepts.
